Live-in partner among 3 arrested in UPSC aspirant’s death case

Three weeks after a 32-year-old UPSC aspirant’s charred body was recovered after a fire in north Delhi’s Timarpur, the Delhi Police arrested three people, including the deceased’s live-in partner, in connection with the alleged murder.

According to the police, Amrita Chauhan (21) allegedly planned with her ex-boyfriend after the deceased refused to delete her private videos he had stored on a hard disk. The third person in the conspiracy was a common friend.

On October 6, the Delhi Police received a PCR call alerting a fire at Timarpur’s Gandhi Vihar. From the spot, the rescuers found a charred body and the deceased was identified as Ram Kesh Meena (32), a UPSC aspirant.

Subsequently, Meena’s family lodged a complaint, and upon investigation, the police found CCTV footage showing two persons, their faces covered, entering the building the night before the fire. Some time later, one of them exits the building, following which a man and a woman were seen exiting the building. The police identified the woman as Amrita Chauhan, Ram Kesh’s live-in partner.

“As per the CCTV footage, the fire broke out soon after they left the building and Amrita’s phone’s CDR confirmed that she was near Ram Kesh’s flat at the time of the incident,” said a senior Delhi Police officer. Following this, the police zeroed in on the main accused’s location and arrested her.

During interrogation, she identified the co-accused, her ex-boyfriend, Sumit Kashyap, and a friend, Sandeep Kumar. While Sumit was arrested on October 2, Sandeep was arrested on October 23.

“Amrita met Ram Kesh in May this year, and they started a relationship, following which they moved in together at the Gandhi Vihar flat. During this time, Ram Kesh recorded private videos of Amrita and stored them on a hard disk,” the police said.

The accused allegedly told the police that she asked him to delete the recordings but he avoided the subject and did not delete the videos. “Following this, Amrita confided in her ex-boyfriend Sumit, who helped her plot Meena’s murder in a manner that looks like a fire accident,” the officer said.

Sumit, who used to work in LPG distribution, helped Amrita to understand how much time a cylinder would take to explode, and the prime accused, being a forensics student, helped the duo to plan the alleged murder, said the police.

According to the police, on October 5, Sumit and Sandeep thrashed Ram Kesh and choked him to death. “They then poured oil, ghee and wine on the body to fuel the fire, following which Sumit pulled out the gas cylinder from the kitchen and placed it near Ram Kesh’s head. The knob was turned, and gas started filling the room. The accused had already taken Ram Kesh’s two laptops, the hard disk, and other belongings,” the officer said. Sumit then ignited the fire using a lighter and locked the main door, the police learnt during interrogation.

About an hour later, after the three left the spot, the cylinder exploded, they told the police.

The police have recovered the hard disk that contained objectionable videos and photographs of the accused, and other belongings of Ram Kesh, along with the mobile phones of the accused.
