A book corner featuring the works of Malayalam literary critic M. Leelavathy was opened at Kesari Smaraka Sahrudaya Library on Pipeline Road, Thrikkakara, on Monday (September 22). Industries Minister P. Rajeeve inaugurated the book corner and released an anthology of select essays by Dr Leelavathy, who turned 98 last week.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Leelavathy said it was readers who created writers. She was attending a public event after a long time.

The book corner was set up at the library, which was renovated at a cost of over ₹7 lakh as part of the ‘Grandhasalakalkoppam Kalamassery’ initiative of Mr. Rajeeve, an official release said.

Mr. Rajeeve said book corners were being set up in libraries in the name of five writers who live in the Kalamassery constituency and have won the Sahitya Akademi awards. He said the Grandhasalakalkoppam Kalamassery project was designed with the vision of renovating libraries in tune with the needs of the digital era. “Books worth ₹12 lakh have been distributed to different libraries. A project worth ₹1 crore is also being implemented for 10 libraries using corporate social responsibility funds,” the Minister said.

Seema Kannan, chairperson, Kalamassery municipality, chaired the meet.
