The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed the petition filed by a fisherman from Rameswaram who had sought a direction to the authorities concerned to permit fishermen to use fiberglass-reinforced plastic motorised boats to travel to Katchatheevu for St. Antony’s Church festival, which is scheduled to be held on February 27 and 28.

A Division Bench of Justices G. Jayachandran and K. K. Ramakrishnan upheld the decision taken by the authorities to reject the request made to permit the use of fiberglass reinforced plastic motorised boats to travel to Katchatheevu.

The court said the government had regulated travel to Katchatheevu by taking into consideration the security of individuals.

‘No exceptions’

There cannot be any deviation or exception to the regulation, the court said and dismissed the petition filed by J. Brinso Raymond of Rameswaram.

The authorities concerned had refused to permit the use of fiberglass-reinforced plastic motorised boats citing risk factors.
