A 38-year-old man was on Friday arrested by the Forest Department officials for the electrocution of a spotted deer near Sathyamangalam in Erode district.
The arrested was identified as Vellaiyan from Kombai Thotti village. According to the Forest Department, officials on patrol near Makkanpalayam on Friday found the carcass of a female spotted deer in a forested area close to Palayur village. The animal had died after coming into contact with a live electric wire that was illegally connected from a power line.
Officials traced those involved and intercepted Vellaiyan when he attempted to retrieve the carcass. He admitted to electrocuting the deer during questioning by the forest officials.
Kadambur forest range officials remanded Vellaiyan to judicial custody at the Erode district jail on Saturday, October 18.
