Teynampet Police arrested a 40-year-old man for stealing a gold chain after befriending a woman through a matrimonial app.
The police said the complainant was a 39-year-old woman from Nesapakkam, K.K.Nagar, and had two children. In 2013, her husband died and she was looking for a new alliance through a matrimony site. Recently, one Suresh Kumar proposed to marry her.
On Friday, he invited her to a park near Valluvar Kottam, where he met her in his car and sexually harassed her. He told her to give him her gold chain to have a look at it and she did so. Sometime later, she collected the chain and put it in her bag. He asked her to get a soft drink from a nearby shop. When she returned, she found the chain missing from her bag. When she questioned him about it, he drove away without responding.
Based on her complaint, Teynampet Police registered a case, and arrested Suresh Kumar, 40, of Nungambakkam. Further investigation revealed that he had cheated a few other women in a similar manner under the pretext of marrying them after befriending them through such sites. He already has five criminal cases, the police said.
