A 45-year-old man was brutally murdered in front of his children allegedly for refusing to pay hafta, protection money, in Wilson Garden on Sunday night.
The victim has been identified as Rasheed Pasha, a mechanic.
According to police, three persons attacked him with a cricket bat and a blunt weapon on Bada Makan Road, killing him on the spot.
The video of the murder was recorded by a passer-by which went viral on social media, drawing public outrage.
The victim’s brother, Nadeem Pasha, said, “My brother was murdered in front of his two children just for refusing to pay hafta. We want justice.”
The police said the incident stems from a dispute earlier in the day. Rasheed had recently renovated his shop when a few locals approached him in the morning and demanded ₹50,000 as protection money.
Rasheed reportedly refused to pay the amount, leading to a heated argument. Later in the evening, around 8.30 p.m., the men returned to his shop and assaulted Rasheed with a bat and clubs in front of his two children.
Senior police officials, including Central Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Akshay M. Hakay, visited the spot and inspected the crime scene. The Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) platoons have been deployed as part of preventive measures in the area.
A case has been registered and a manhunt has been launched to trace and arrest the absconding accused.
