Mangalore University Physical Education Director passes away

Mangalore University’s Director of Physical Education, C.K. Kishore Kumar, passed away at 60 in Mangaluru on Sunday (October 5, 2025).

Mr. Kumar was hospitalised 10 days ago following a health complication. He passed away around 2 a.m. He has left behind his wife, Aruna, an advocate and two sons. His friends and well-wishers offered their condolences at his house in Kadri Shivabagh in Mangaluru between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.

Mr. Kumar was a physical and cultural instructor at the MGM College, Udupi, between 1990 and 1991. After working as a full-time guest faculty in the University College of Physical Education in Bengaluru, Mr. Kumar joined Mangalore University as the Assistant Director of Physical Education on July 1996.

He held different posts in the University, namely Deputy Director of Physical Education, Chairman and Coordinator of the Department of PG Studies and Research in Physical Education and Sports, Coordinator of MEd Degree programme, and Director of Physical Education Department. He has also served as the In-charge Vice Chancellor and the Registrar for a few weeks.

Mr. Kumar is remembered for framing the University’s sports policy, which the University brought into effect from the South Zone Inter-University Kho-Kho championship for men held in Mangaluru in 2016-17. During his tenure as the Director, the University’s athletics team for men and women won the overall champion trophy at inter-university competitions in 2015-16.

He was instrumental in establishing a gym facility, equipped with the latest fitness equipment, for sportspersons staying at the university hostel. He also installed a new gym and recreation facility for university employees at the university’s Administrative Block and at the Indoor Sports Complex.
