The Karkala Rural police have arrested Nazir, 45, a resident of Ganjimath in Mangaluru, for his alleged involvement in an online betting racket using different bank accounts of his family members and relatives.

During an investigation into an online investment fraud case, the police apprehended Nazir after discovering high-value transactions in several of the bank accounts he was operating.

The police seized his mobile phone and found links to five websites he used for online betting. Proceeds of the betting were being distributed among 12 bank accounts of his family members and relatives. The police were searching for persons allegedly associated with Nazir in the online betting racket.

The police registered a case for an offence punishable under Section 112(1) (petty organised crime) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, for which an offender can be imprisoned for a term that may extend to seven years. The police have also booked him under Section 78(i)(iii) of the Karnataka Police Act.

The police have seized ₹30,000. A process has been initiated to seize ₹50,000 from a few bank accounts operated by Nazir, the police said.
