New Delhi
The bypolls for 12 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards will be held on November 30, with results to be announced on December 3, the Delhi State Election Commission said on Tuesday.
According to the commission, nominations open on November 3, with November 10 being the last date for filing papers. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on November 12, and withdrawals can be made until November 15. Polling will be conducted from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. without any break.
The bypolls will be held in Mundka, Shalimar Bagh-B, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Dwarka-B, Dichaon Kalan, Naraina, Sangam Vihar-A, Dakshin Puri, Greater Kailash, and Vinod Nagar wards.
Eleven of the 12 seats fell vacant after sitting councillors from the BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) contested and won seats in the Delhi Assembly poll held in February, including Shalimar Bagh-B, which was earlier represented by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
BJP councillor Kamaljeet Sehrawat vacated the Dwarka-B seat following her victory from the West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.
‘Development affected’
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav criticised the delay in conducting the bypolls, saying it had “severely affected the development” of these wards due to the absence of elected councillors.
In a bid to prevent voter confusion caused by multiple candidates sharing the same name, the State Election Commission will include photographs of bona fide candidates on the EVMs.
Officials said instances had been reported where names of such candidates appeared consecutively on ballots due to alphabetical order, leading to mix-ups among voters.
According to the guidelines, the colour photographs with a white or off-white background will display the face of the candidate on two-thirds of the photo space for better visibility.
