The indefinite hunger strike of domestic breeding checkers, multitasking staff and contractual field workers of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for regularisation of their services and other benefits entered the fourth day on Thursday.
The workers, on contract and protesting since Monday, demand equal pay, medical and earned leave, and compensatory jobs for the families of deceased employees.
“We will not end our protest until our demands are met and we receive a written order. Verbal assurances are not enough,” said Devanand Sharma, secretary of the Anti-Malaria Ekta Karmachari Union.
A meeting was held on Tuesday between Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, Leader of the MCD House, Parvesh Wahi, Health Department officials, union representatives, and MCD officials. However, no consensus was reached on the workers’ demands.
“There is neither Dussehra nor Deepavali for us. We are sitting at gate no. 5 of the Civic Centre, continuing our strike with the hope of justice,” said Mr. Sharma.
The union leader said councillors from all parties have “acknowledged the legitimacy of their demands”. Mr. Sharma added, “When everyone agrees that our demands are justified, we fail to understand where the problem lies. If we are right, why is no action being taken?”
