Undeterred by “eviction threats”, workers of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Tuesday vowed to continue their indefinite strike until their demands for job regularisation and fair wages are met.
Over 5,200 multi-tasking staff, including domestic breeding checkers and contractual field workers, have been on strike since September 29, demanding regularisation of jobs, equal and standardised pay, medical and earned leave, and compensatory employment for the families of deceased workers.
The striking workers claimed that the police visited their protest site outside the Civic Centre and asked them to vacate it. The move, they alleged, is an attempt by the civic body to silence their protest.
“We are holding a peaceful sit-in with police permission. For 20 days, there was no objection, and now suddenly we are being told to leave. Why now? This is clearly being done at the behest of the MCD, which has failed to meet our demands,” said Devanand Sharma, general secretary of the Anti-Malaria Ekta Karamchari Union, under whose banner nearly 500 workers assemble daily. Mr. Sharma said protesters have taken care to avoid causing traffic disruptions and have even stopped using loudspeakers.
