A city court on Tuesday sentenced MDMK MLA Sadhan Thirumalai Kumar to two years’ imprisonment in a cheque bounce case.
Mr. Kumar, MLA from the Vasudevanallur Assembly constituency in Tenkasi district, had availed himself of a loan of ₹1 crore in 2016 from New Ling Overseas, a Chennai-based financial firm.
He had issued two cheques for ₹50 lakh each towards repayment. However, when the cheques were presented for encashment, they were returned due to insufficient funds in his bank account. In 2019, the director of the financial firm filed a cheque bounce case against Mr. Kumar before the Egmore court in Chennai. As the accused is an MLA, the case was transferred to the special court for cases involving MPs and MLAs.
Subsequently, on the directions of the special court, the case was moved to the George Town court in Chennai. After hearing the case, Magistrate Sundarapandian held that the charges against the MLA had been proved beyond reasonable doubt. The magistrate sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment, and directed him to pay ₹1 crore within two months, failing which he would have to undergo an additional three months’ imprisonment.
The court also granted him two months’ time to file an appeal, and ordered that the sentence be suspended till then.
