A century-old lower primary (LP) school here, slated for closure after the PWD engineering division denied fitness for the building, was revived by Malappuram Municipality by creating a historic turnaround.

Students of GMLP School, Muttippady, Melmuri, can now enjoy fully air-conditioned classrooms. The municipality erected a new school building on procured land and equipped it with modern facilities such as digital classrooms.

The three-storey building includes purified water kiosks on each floor, surveillance cameras, an integrated public address system and child-friendly fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) benches and desks.

The staff room and principal’s room sport a sleek, professional aesthetic reminiscent of a high-end office. Twenty-two two-tonne split air-conditioners installed at the school run on solar panels mounted on the terrace. The school’s deep yellow and green colour scheme was designed to spark the imagination of its young learners. Municipal Chairman Mujeeb Kaderi claimed it to be the first fully air-conditioned government primary school in the State.

The municipality spent ₹5.51 crore for the land and building. When ₹5.01 crore was spent from the municipal funds, ₹50 lakh was given from local MLA P. Ubaidulla’s asset development fund.

E.T. Mohammed Basheer, MP, inaugurated the school building in a festive ambience here on Sunday evening (October 19). Mr. Kaderi presided over the function. Mr. Ubaidulla was the chief guest.

Municipal vice chairperson Fousiya Kunhippu, councillors P.K. Sakeer Hussain, Pari Abdul Majeed, Mariyumma Shareef Konothodi, C.P. Ayshabi, and Najiya Shihar, and headmistress P. Padmaja spoke. “We gave this school a unique and bold try, aiming not only to raise the standard of infrastructure and education, but also to set a model for others,” said Mr. Kaderi.
