President and managing director of Volvo Group, India, Bengaluru, Kamal Bali, said on Saturday that there is a need for genuine leaders in academia and industry who will drive transformation.

Delivering the 23rd convocation address of the National Institute of Technology – Karnataka (NIT-K) at Surathkal, Mr. Bali, a former chairperson of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), South India, said that the NIT-K has all the required facilities and is taking the right steps to drive meaningful and long-term partnerships with alumni and industry.

He urged students to explore innovation, entrepreneurship, excellence in quality, and to take pride in being an Indian.

Of the 1,995 students who were admitted to receive degrees at the convocation, 1,455 received their certificates in person.

A total of 935 BTech., 641 MTech., 23 MTech. (Research), 66 MCA, 69 MBA, 68 MSc, and 193 PhD degrees were awarded. The number of PhDs awarded is the highest so far.

In recognition of their academic excellence, 10 BTech. and 31 postgraduate students received Institute Gold Medals and medals sponsored by external agencies for securing the highest grades in their respective programmes.

The institute set up four mini-stages and degree certificates to 1,455 candidates were handed over in parallel streams by one of the deans and the respective heads of departments in an hour, setting a record, a release from NIT-K said.
