In a step towards modernising campus-based postal services, the Department of Posts, Tamil Nadu Postal Circle, inaugurated an N-Gen (Next-Generation) post office at IIT-Madras in Chennai on Monday.
Launched as part of the department’s national initiative to revamp post offices located within educational institutions, the N-Gen post office aims at transforming conventional postal spaces into youth-centric and technology-enabled service environments, aligned with the expectations of the younger generation, said a press release.
The facility was inaugurated by V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT-Madras, in the presence of Jane Prasad, Registrar, IIT-Madras; G. Natarajan, Postmaster General, Chennai City Region (CCR); and Manoj M., Director of Postal Services, CCR.
At IIT-Madras, the post office has been reimagined as a smart campus hub, offering a more accessible and engaging space, particularly for students.
The redesigned interiors of the post office have been enhanced through curated artworks, improved lighting, and a spacious waiting area, creating a modern civic space, while retaining the core functions of a post office.
The upgraded facility, which also integrates digital banking and e-commerce logistics, provide a comprehensive range of services, including Speed Post and parcel services, Aadhaar services, and digital payment facilities.
Additional amenities such as a coffee vending machine, free Wi-Fi, books, board games, and charging ports have been introduced to enhance the students’ experience.
The department’s approach focuses on strengthening its engagement with youngsters by reshaping public service spaces to match evolving user expectations, while continuing to ensure reliable postal services.
