Union Minister of Shipping, Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said here on Thursday that New Mangalore Port will handle 100 million tonnes of cargo by 2047, during the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision, a long-term roadmap for India’s maritime resurgence.
Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), he said that the port was inaugurated in 1975 and handled around 90,000 tonnes of cargo then. It handled 46.7 million tonnes of cargo in 2024-25.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants all ports in the country to handle 10,000 million tonnes of cargo by 2047. “I am confident of Indian ports achieving that target in the next 22 years,” he said.
He said the Prime Minister has directed that India should emerge among the top 10 ship-building nations in the world by 2030 and the country should figure among the five top ship-building countries by 2047.
The Minister said that the road map has been prepared to increase profit of New Mangalore Port by 10 times in the next decade. Development works of the port will always be done by involving local people.
He said the Union government is moving with Karnataka and other States in the journey to make India the top economy in the world by 2047.
Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, New and Renewable Energy, Prahlad Joshi said the New and Renewable Energy Ministry is working with the Directorate of Shipping on the use of green hydrogen as fuel for ships.
Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP, said that the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has agreed to a proposal for the NHAI to take over the Port Connectivity Road from B.C. Road to Surathkal. Mr. Gadkari has also approved the preparation of a detailed project report for bypass road from Surathkal to B.C. Road to connect NH 66 and NH 75. The Union government has constituted a Joint Working Group to study the feasibility of building an integrated rail and road tunnel in the Shiradi Ghat section.
