Deputy Commissioner Kumar on Friday said there is no shortage of urea fertilizer in Mandya district and farmers need not panic.
Speaking at a meeting with officials held at his office in Mandya, he said that the district currently has a stock of 5,000 metric tonnes of urea and an additional 1,800 metric tonnes of urea is expected to arrive shortly. All necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that agricultural activities in the district continue without disruption, he added.
Mr. Kumar stressed that fertilizer dealers must ensure their physical stock matches the data updated online, and warned of strict action if any attempt is made to create artificial scarcity or sell fertilizers at inflated prices. Fertilizer and seed dealers must display boards with details of available stock and prices, he instructed.
The Deputy Commissioner also instructed agriculture officers to create awareness among farmers about the benefits and proper use of nano urea. Further, tahsildars and Assistant Agriculture Directors at the taluk level have been directed to regularly inspect fertilizer outlets and farming areas to ensure compliance with regulations.
Special teams have been formed under the leadership of sub-divisional officers to prevent the misuse of urea for non-agricultural purposes. The teams include officials from the industries department, commercial tax department, and police.
Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi also directed agriculture department officials to coordinate with local police, and conduct raids in cases of illegal urea stockpiling.
He also noted that high footfall at some outlets could lead to crowding and confusion. In such cases, police personnel should be deployed in advance to manage the situation, he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner B.C. Shivanandamurthy said that the demand for urea is expected to rise in August and September, and officials must remain vigilant as panic buying or purchases by outsiders could occur.
