November 15 is last date for insuring samba paddy


The last date to apply for availing insurance cover for ‘samba’ paddy in Tiruvarur district will be November 15.

Disclosing this in a press release, Collector V. Mohanachandran has exhorted the district farmers to remit ₹1,393.08 per hectare as their share of crop insurance premium on or before November 15 to avoid last minute rush.

According to official sources, the ‘samba’ paddy crop is expected to be raised in 67,340 hectares in Tiruvarur district during the 2025-26 season and, out the total area of coverage, the crop had been raised in 13,581 hectares so far.

Payment of insurance premium and other formalities can be carried out through the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Credit Societies or nationalised banks or ‘e-Service’ centres or through www.pmfbygov.in portal by submitting/uploading required documents.

In the meantime, inquiries reveal that information relating to the ‘samba’ crop insurance premium and the last date for application for crop insurance for the ‘samba’ paddy to be raised during the current season in Thanjavur district is yet to be announced by the officials.

As per the official sources, cultivation of ‘samba’ crop in Thanjavur district had been taken up in around 22,000 acres so far during the current 2025-26 cultivation season.

Plea to reduce discharge

Citing the meteorological predictions of early onset of the north-east monsoon and heavy precipitations during the second and third weeks of current month, farmers have exhorted the Water Resources Department to reduce the discharge of water into Cauvery river irrigation network considerably.

As on October 15 morning, around 12,000 cusecs of water being released from Stanley Reservoir at Mettur. Water release from the Grand Anicut stood at 2,200 cusecs in Cauvery, 5,006 in Vennar and 2,300 in Grand Anicut Canal systems.
