A total of 2,850 beneficiaries participated in the Nalam Kakkum Stalin camp conducted at a private school in Mulamoodu in Kanniyakumari district on Saturday, August 23, marking the highest number of participants at a camp in the State on the day.
The camp, which is being implemented by the Tamil Nadu government since August, aims to make medical services easily accessible to all people. An the camp, patients are referred to specialists after initial consultations.
At the first camp held in Nagercoil corporation, 1,650 people were diagnosed as outpatients. At the second camp held at Thiruvuttar block, 1,438 beneficiaries participated. The third camp held at Kalkulam block witnessed a huge turnout with 2,850 participants comprising 610 men, 2,013 women and 227 children.
Over the course of three camps, a wide range of consultations were provided.
General medicine accounted for 2,791 patients, while general surgery covered 141 individuals. In addition, 101 people consulted obstetricians, 299 sought ophthalmology services, 101 received Ear and Nose Treatment (ENT), 106 underwent neurology consultations, 124 visited dentists, 22 were treated in psychiatry, 145 in pulmonary medicine, 172 in cardiology and 267 in dermatology.
A total of 135 women were screened for cervical cancer, out of whom eight were diagnosed with the disease. Similarly, 142 women underwent breast cancer screening and 14 were found to have symptoms. All those requiring further treatment were referred to Government Medical College and Hospital in Asaripallam.
An official from the district health department said that special drives were launched to ensure maximum participation, which included provision of buses from rural areas. The initiative was especially beneficial for needy communities, who are showing keen interest in attending the camps.
Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena said the camps were being held every Saturday at different blocks, and the remarkable turnout in Kalkulam block had placed the district at the forefront in the State in terms of camp participation on August 23.
