The Udhagamandalam Municipality seized 819 banned half-litre water bottles from the roof of a tourist bus in Udhagamandalam on Friday (January 9, 2026).
According to officials, they had received information about the presence of the water bottles and decided to conduct a surprise raid on the vehicle. Officials from the civic body, including the Municipal Health Officer, checked the bus and found the bottles hidden on the roof of the vehicle near the Ooty Boat House. They imposed a fine of ₹41,000 on the bus driver.
The officials appealed to tourists visiting the district to use the water ATMs that are installed across the district and to not bring single-use plastic products into the Nilgiris.
