Owner of saree shop among two arrested for assaulting woman thief


The City Market Police have arrested a cloth merchant and his assistant for assaulting a woman for stealing a bundle of saree in public view. The accused later handed her over to the the police. The stolen item was recovered and she was remanded to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the assault was recorded by one of the shop keepers on his mobile phone and uploaded on social media which went viral.

The video clip reached the members of Kannada Rakshana Vedike members who taking objection to the assault staged a protest demanding action against the accused.

The police based on the complaint arrested Umed Ram, owner of the shop along with his assistant charging them for assault and outraging the modesty of a woman and remanded them to judicial custody.

Umed Ram had kept a bundle of sarees outside the shop when the woman, a habitual offender stole it and escaped on September 20. He noticed this in the CCTV footage, kept a watch and caught the woman next day.

The accused thrashed her in the middle of the road, reigning kicks and punches, and dragged her around and humiliated her before handing her over to the police.
