Urging the district administration to construct houses for persons with disabilities under any government scheme on the patta land allotted to them, members of the Erode District Differently-Abled Persons’ Welfare Association gathered at Sampath Nagar, near the Collectorate, on Monday (November 17, 2025).
Led by its president, S. Durairaj, the members said that 67 persons with disabilities were issued patta in Puthur Pudupalayam village in Vellode panchayat in 2023. Likewise, 33 persons were issued patta in Nallagoundenpalayam in Chithode town panchayat in 2022. However, their request for the construction of free houses under any government scheme has not yet been fulfilled by the administration, causing hardship to the beneficiaries. Many members had also submitted petitions, seeking allotment of tenements constructed by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB). Though they have been waiting for the past six years, no action has been taken, they claimed.
Mr. Durairaj sought a written assurance from officials of the Differently-Abled Welfare Department that their demands would be met within a stipulated time. Officials later met the members and assured them that houses would be constructed under the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam scheme. They said an assurance letter would be issued and the members’ demands would be forwarded to the government for sanctioning of houses.
