The 17th State conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) will be conducted from September 24 to 27 in Marthandam.
AIDWA Tamil Nadu State secretary A. Radhika told media persons in Kuzhithurai on Monday that the first day of the conference would begin with a rally and a public meeting in which Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would participate.
“When women approach police stations in Tamil Nadu regarding assaults and dowry harassment, the police often act with a patriarchal mindset rather than supporting women,” she said. The conference would focus on urging the State government to conduct a special Assembly session on the issue.
Highlighting the rising number of POCSO cases, she said the conference would stress on the police stations to adhere to regulations laid down by courts in such cases.
“In recent times, caste-honour killings have been on the rise. To prevent them, a special law is necessary, which AIDWA has been consistently demanding. However, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister stated that there was no need for a separate law as the existing laws are sufficient.”
“The DMK government, which claims to uphold social justice, must enact a special law to curb caste-honour killings. The conference will strongly press for this,” she said.
Ms. Radhika said over 500 delegates from across Tamil Nadu would participate in the State conference.
AIDWA State president S. Valentina and vice-president Usha Basi were present.
