The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday ordered notice to the State on the public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to the government to ensure that proper infrastructure was in place at Karambakudi Government Hospital in Pudukkottai district.
A Division Bench of Justices Anita Sumanth and C. Kumarappan was hearing the petition filed by S. Shanmugam of Karambakudi. The petitioner said the government hospital was one of the major hospitals in the district.
Patients who were being treated at the primary health centres in the district were referred to Karambakudi Government Hospital for further treatment. However, people have complained about the delay and poor quality of treatment at the hospital. Due to the shortage of medical staff the quality of healthcare had deteriorated, he said.
He sought a direction to the authorities to fill the existing vacancies in the posts of doctors, pharmacists, nursing assistants, record clerk and radiographer at the hospital.
The petitioner also sought a direction to the authorities to take immediate steps to ensure the functioning of the ultrasound scan facility, install basic emergency medical equipment on the hospital premises and appoint medical staff to attend emergency care at the hospital. The court adjourned the hearing in the case by four weeks.
