Police arrest man for his girlfriend’s death

The Choolaimedu police arrested a man for allegedly abetting the suicide of his girlfriend.

The deceased, K. Pooja, 24, was a resident of Pushpa Nagar in Nungambakkam and was pursuing her first year of college. Since her school days, she had been in a relationship with Harish Kumar, 25, of Choolaimedu.  However, Pooja’s family was against the relationship, police said.

On January 17,  Harish Kumar’s mother reportedly contacted Pooja’s mother over the phone, gave her an address, and told her that Pooja was lying unconscious there, before disconnecting the call. Pooja’s father  rushed to the location and found that it was Harish Kumar’s house and that Pooja had been taken to a private hospital. When he reached the hospital, doctors informed him that Pooja had already died. Based on a complaint lodged by Pooja’s father, Kannan, the Choolaimedu police  began an investigation.

The police found that when Pooja went to Harish Kumar’s house on January 17, he allegedly tried to obtain her consent for a registered marriage, which led to a heated argument between the two and Harish Kumar allegedly told Pooja to “go and die,” following which she ended her life.

Based on these findings,  the police arrested Harish Kumar.
