Potters staging a demonstration in front of the Collectorate in Dindigul on Monday.

The potters of Dindigul district have urged the State government to include clay pots and clay chulhas (clay stoves) in the pongal gift hamper for distribution to the eligible rice card holders and Sri Lankan Tamils living in rehabilitation camps in the State.
They urged the State government to procure clay pots and clay chulhas and to distribute them along with the other gift hamper items to be given to the beneficiaries during pongal in 2026. The potters highlighted that they were suffering a loss. Drawing the attention of the authorities to their plight, they urged the government to fulfil their charter of demands.
Potters from various organisations in the district staged a demonstration in front of the Dindigul Collectorate on Monday with the clay pots and the clay chulhas. Around 150 potters from Dindigul district participated in the demonstration.
They also urged the government to enhance the monsoon relief being provided to potters from ₹5,000 to ₹7,000. The potters who were not paid the relief and included should also be included and paid the monsoon relief, they said.
They said the Welfare Board Identity Cards should be issued to the potters who had been left out. No objection certificates should also be issued to enable the potters to extract soil from waterbodies to make the clay pots. Dedicated places should be allotted to the potters for clay pots and clay chulhas making process, they said and urged the State government to fulfil their demands. They also submitted a petition to the authorities.
