Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday said preparatory measures have been undertaken in Chennai to deal with the impact of Cyclone Montha.

He inspected the desilting work at Vyasarpadi canal. He later visited the Captain Cotton Canal, where the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has undertaken desilting work at a cost of ₹6.85 crore.

Mr. Udhayanidhi also reviewed similar operations in Kodungaiyur Canal and at the Link Canal Bridge on Manali Road. According to a press release, he also inspected the widening and deepening of the Goodshed pond in Tondiarpet zone. The pond, located on 9.64 acres of railway land, was expanded to store more rainwater and reduce waterlogging in surrounding areas. The release added that surplus water from the pond would drain into the Buckingham Canal.

The GCC had completed the desilting of 18 canals and 13 ponds, covering a total of 331 km, and removed 3.5 lakh tonnes of waste.
