The entertainment world is mourning the loss of the celebrated actor Govardhan Asrani, commonly known simply as Asrani, who passed away on Monday at the age of 84. His demise has prompted many prominent figures to pay tribute to his enduring legacy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourns Asrani’s demise: “Deeply saddened”
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji. A gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist, he entertained audiences across generations. He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Born in 1941, Asrani’s career spanned several decades and he appeared in over 300 films. He became especially memorable for his role in the classic film Sholay, where his comic timing and screen presence left an indelible mark on the audiences.
His passing has also stirred an outpouring of grief across the film industry. Fellow actors and filmmakers recalled how he brought warmth and laughter to sets even when off-camera. Many emphasized that beyond his talents, it was his gentle nature and generosity that set him apart.
The actor’s manager confirmed that Asrani had been hospitalised in Mumbai due to breathing issues before his death. His funeral was held in a private ceremony, attended by close family and friends.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message and the wide-ranging tributes underscore the immense respect Asrani earned over his lifetime. Though the cheers may now fall silent, his work and the joy he inspired continue to live on.
