The Puducherry government has decided to distribute a kit containing five grocery items free of cost to all ration card holders in the Union Territory (UT) as a Deepavali gift.

Approval has been given to provide 2 kg each of sugar and sunflower oil, 1 kg of chenna dal (kadalai paruppu), and 500 g each of maida and rava to card holders. Sanction for the distribution of these items was given on September 24. Around 3.45 lakh ration card holders will benefit from the same in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, said an official.

The Puducherry State Consumers Cooperative Federation Limited (CONFED) will procure the five food products from open market through an e-tender for distribution through outlets, said an official. “We have started the tendering process and the groceries will be distributed before the festival,” the official said.
