Rain continues across southern districts; reservoir levels surge

Steady rainfall has been continuing across the southern districts such as Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi.

In Tenkasi, Gadananathi dam water level rose by four feet in a single day and touched 48 feet. Water inflow was reported to be 190 cusecs with discharge of 35 cusecs. Ramanadhi dam water level rose to 2.50 feet to 57.50 feet with 97 cusecs inflow of water and discharge of 40 cusecs.

The rainfall recorded in Tenkasi district ending at 6 a.m. are as follows (in mm): Ayikudi 30, Tenkasi 6, Shencottah 12, Sivagiri 9 and Gadananadhi dam recorded 3 mm rainfall.

All waterfalls in Cortallam continue to witness flooding. As a result bathing at Courtallam falls and Old Courtallam falls have been restricted for the fourth consecutive day. Many people who returned to their hometown for Deepavali holidays were disappointed as they could not bathe in Courtallam waterfalls due to safety restrictions.

In Thoothukudi district several places received heavy rainfall on Saturday night and in the early hours of Sunday. This led to rain water getting stagnated in low lying areas in some parts of the city.

The rainfall recorded in Thoothukud district ending at 6:30 a.m. as follows (in mm): Kayalpattinam 81, Thoothukudi 24, Kovilpatti 14, Vilathikulam 13, Ottapidaram 5, Vaippar 12 and Tiruchendur recorded 13 mm rainfall.

Both Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli district received favourable rainfall at catchment areas. The water level in Pechiparai dam stood at 41.09 feet against 48 feet and Perunchani dam stood at 62.3 feet, where the maximum capacity is 77 feet.
