Midia Research has been running its second annual survey of songwriters, canvassing the views of 776 this time round. Among the findings: around one in five songwriters says that building their brand on social media is a top priority this year. The report also explores the financial challenges facing many songwriters while identifying some low-hanging fruit they can grasp to earn more money. For example, 61% of those surveyed are not signed up to a mechanical rights organisation.
According to Midia, its interviews identified unhappiness that the music industry ‘does not always recognise the value of songwriting’. However, it found a growing number of songwriters turning to ‘creator marketplace’s including Fiverr and SoundBetter to find new income streams. “The songwriters we surveyed and interviewed reflect a wide range of new business structures, many existing outside of traditional rights frameworks, with creator marketplaces and social platforms playing a growing role,” as VP of music strategy Tatiana Cirisano put it.
