Residents across North Chennai have voiced concern over poor waste management by private contractors, even as Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials say that garbage is removed whenever complaints are raised.
Residents, however, insist that proactive measures are needed to prevent open dumping. “Only if people stop throwing waste in public places can the situation improve,” officials said.
C. Raghukumar of the Community Welfare Brigade alleged that garbage was not cleared for three days in parts of Perambur, forcing residents to approach local conservancy inspectors directly.
‘Poor respose’
“Supervisors of the private company roped in for garbage collection do not answer calls, and complaints go unattended. We regret having supported the privatisation of Solid Waste Management in Thiru.Vi.Ka Nagar Zone (VI),” he said.
