Residents of Sellur have been raising repeated complaints about sewage overflowing onto their streets. To make matters worse, the rain on Monday evening left the place inundated.

The residents said sewage was overflowing onto the streets from the septic tank. They said they had raised complaints on several occasions and had urged authorities to look into the issue. However, only temporary solutions were being offered instead of a permanent solution, they said.

People and vehicle users were unable to use these streets. The stench was unbearable. People are unable to stay in the house due to the unpleasant smell. It has also led to mosquito menace, they complained.

They said they were unable to sleep peacefully in the house. They were unable to cook food for the family members. The rain had made things even worse. Now, there was ankle-deep sewage water on the streets right in front of their houses. People, especially children are falling sick, the residents said.

They said they had already raised complaints regarding the issue and also staged several protests. Whenever there was a protest, the authorities cleared the place. However, the problem was recurring. A permanent solution should be worked out, they said.

The authorities said the issue was being looked into. Sellur was congested. There are many drainage pipelines running through the area carrying sewage to the nearby pumping station. It needed to be separated to reduce the load, they said. They added that they would take up the issue at the zonal-level meeting and work out a solution to redress the grievances of the people.
