The single-lane wide road that runs behind the Ennore Thermal Power Plant in Tiruvallur district will be widened to a two-lane wide facility to help reduce traffic on other roads in the surrounding areas.
Sources in the Highways Department said that the 4.6 km long road between Chepakkam (not Chepauk in Chennai) to Mouthambedu, near Minjur, could be utilised in a better manner if it were wider, since it is in an industrial area. “It will come in handy during heavy traffic when motorists can be diverted to it. It can also be used in times of emergency. Local vehicles will also be able to drive safely.”
The work, which includes widening of existing culverts to allow free flow of water in streams, will cost Rs. 10.50 crore and will be taken up along with the widening of the Chinna Kavanam to Perumbedu Road and Athipattu Railway Station Road.
The Chinna Kavanam to Perumbedu Road, which takes off 600 mts from the railway underpass, is 8 km in length. Of this, 2.8 km of road is being widened from the present 5.5 mts to 7 mts at a cost of ₹3.21 crore. “The Balasubramaniaswamy Temple at Perumbedu attracts a lot of crowds on Tuesdays, Saturdays and festivals and this widening will aid devotees to the temple,” said a Highways official.
With the third work, the Athipattu Railway Station Road will become 5.5 mt wide for a length of 1.6 km from its present 3.75 km. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 1.67 crore. Tenders have been called for widening these facilities and basic work including marking and grubbing is expected to commence by December .
