Sanitation workers marching to Secretariat detained

The Greater Chennai City Police detained hundreds of protesting sanitation workers, on Saturday while they marched towards the Secretariat to submit a petition to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, seeking job permanency.

The workers, who were earlier under National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) in Royapuram and Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar Zones under the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), were detained at over 20 marriage halls across the city, and released at around 7 p.m.

The protesters later regrouped at Chennai Central as of 8 p.m. According to Uzhaippor Urimai Iyakkam which led the protests against the privatisation of conservancy work since August, a solution can be reached only if the CM holds discussions with the workers.
