The South Asian University (SAU) has suspended two hostel staffers, days after a first-year student alleged that she was sexually assaulted on campus and the two tried to “suppress the matter” and “blame her” instead.
According to two separate orders issued by deputy registrar Bibhupada Tripathy, hostel assistant Anupma Arora has been suspended until the submission of an inquiry report while the warden of the girls’ hostel, Rinkoo Devi Gupta, has been relieved from her responsibilities with immediate effect.
The action comes in the wake of protests by students since Monday against the university authorities, alleging negligence. The protesting students were demanding a speedy investigation and the suspension of the two hostel staffers. They alleged that the staffers made “insensitive comments” and also advised the survivor to take a shower, which could have destroyed crucial evidence.
An FIR was registered in the matter on Monday. The BTech student, who lives in the university hostel, has accused four people, including a security guard, of sexually assaulting her on the campus premises. According to the police, the first-year student alleged in her complaint that she had been receiving threatening e-mails from an unidentified sender who claimed to possess her morphed images. The sender coerced her into meeting him at a deserted spot on the campus, threatening to circulate the images if she refused. After repeated threats, the student reluctantly went to the location where four men allegedly assaulted her.
No arrest has been made so far.
