The first trailer for Scary Movie, the sixth installment in the long-running horror spoof franchise, has been released, marking Marlon Wayans’ return to the series he launched with his brothers more than two decades ago. The film is set to open in theaters on June 12, with the trailer currently playing in cinemas ahead of Scream 7.

Although widely referred to as Scary Movie 6, the new entry carries the original title, signaling a fresh start for the franchise. Wayans has described the film as a “rebooquel,” blending elements of a reboot with continuation. He reunites on screen with franchise regulars Anna Faris and Regina Hall, alongside Shawn Wayans.

Directed by Michael Tiddes, the film is written by Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans with Rick Alvarez. The ensemble cast also includes Jon Abrahams, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, Dave Sheridan, Damon Wayans Jr., Anthony Anderson and Chris Elliott.

The trailer previews a wide range of genre targets from the past decade, including Get Out, the Terrifier series, Weapons,M3GAN, The Substance, Sinners and the Wednesday series, in addition to renewed jabs at the Scream franchise, which inspired the original 2000 film. Scenes shown in the preview also suggest the film will tackle contemporary political and cultural debates.

The original Scary Movie, directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, became a box office hit and spawned multiple sequels. The franchise went dormant after 2013’s Scary Movie 5. This new installment marks the Wayans brothers’ first return to the property since Scary Movie 2.
