Science park inaugurated in Madurai

The Science Park (STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) at the Anna Park complex in Thirunagar here was thrown open to the public on Tuesday.

Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration P. Moorthy inaugurated the Science Park in the presence of Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan and other officials. Built at a cost of ₹2.70 crore, the park is equipped with 100 scientific instruments and basic amenities.

Some of the scientific concepts at the park included the world time, earth, planetary motion, musical tubes, solar powered radio, variable pendulum, Newton’s colour disc, periodic table, centre of gravity doll, circus of energy, automobile working model and geometrical shapes.

On the very first day itself, the park attracted a large number of curious visitors. From the elderly to the students people had come to explore the various science concepts that were on display at the park. Textbook lessons had come alive. It was a boon to all, they said.

Monisha Chandran came to the park with her son who has started attending kindergarten. She said it was an attractive place where students can play and learn.

Agreeing with her, college students C. Dinesh and B. Thirupathi said the park would not only be useful for the school students but also for college students. It was easy to understand the scientific concepts on display, they said.

S. Shanti and S. Annalakshmi said the students would be able to understand the concepts a lot better and grasp them by observing them. The authorities should also take proper care of the park and ensure that it was properly maintained for the convenience of the public.

A. John Peter visited the park with his wife J. Pandiselvi. The elderly couple came with their grandchildren from Oomachikulam after learning about its inauguration. They said more such parks should be opened in Madurai for the benefit of students.

C. Shanmugasundram, a businessman, said the park should be well promoted.
