The Secondary Grade Seniority Teachers’ Association (SSTA) have announced that they will go on an indefinite strike from December 26 demanding equal pay for equal work.
In a statement, they said, “We have been going to work wearing the ‘Equal Pay for Equal Work’ demand card since December 1. In the second phase, we held a rally throwing light on our demand. In the third phase, we will hold an indefinite strike.”
They highlighted a long-standing pay disparity due to their date of appointment. “Secondary teachers appointed after June 1, 2009, have been facing hardship for the past 12 years, as they have not been paid the same salary as their fellow secondary teachers working in the state,” said J. Robert, general secretary SSTA.
The association said that a discrepancy of ₹3,170 in the Sixth Pay Commission has resulted in a pay difference of twelve years increment. “We had planned to hold a 48-hour wage recovery protest on behalf of our SSTA movement at the end of September, but postponed due to talks held with the School Education Minister,” he said,
However, no further action has been taken three months after the talks and hence, the association has decided on holding three-phase protests
