Several houses damaged in lightning strike in Mangaluru

Electricity meters, among other electronic gadgets, were damaged after lightning struck as many as 10 houses in Kulashekara area in the city on Saturday night. MLC Ivan D’Souza, who visited the houses, said in a statement that the houses suffered damage of about ₹10 lakh.

In addition, some houses and several electrical equipment at Sirla Padpu in Alape Ward No. 51 were also damaged in lightning strike last night.

Mr. D’Souza said that he instructed the officials of Mescom, Mangaluru City Corporation, and the revenue department to take steps to provide compensation to those who suffered damages to their houses.

The MLC said that a high-tension power line passing through Sirla Padpu at a lower level is causing problems to people every year whenever lightning strikes. Mr. D’Souza instructed R. Jayakumar, Managing Director, Mescom to visit the spot and take appropriate steps to prevent the damages.

Rainfall alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday that heavy rain/thunder showers are likely to occur at one or two places over Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts on Monday.

Heavy rain/thunder showers are likely to occur at one or two places over Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on Tuesday. Light to moderate rain/thunder showers are likely to occur at most places over the Uttara Kannada district on the same day.

Heavy rain/thunder showers are likely to occur at one or two places over Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts on Wednesday and Thursday, it said.

The IMD said squally weather with wind speed 35 kmph to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail along and off the Karnataka coast and adjoining sea areas till Wednesday. Fishermen have been asked not to venture out for fishing in sea till then.
