A Montreal couple’s trip to watch Pittsburgh Penguins practice took the most romantic turn imaginable when captain Sidney Crosby unknowingly drove right into the middle of a surprise proposal.
The whole thing was caught on camera, and yeah, the internet lost it.
Mathieu and Sandra, a couple from Montreal, traveled to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex — the Penguins’ practice facility in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania — back in January.
Sandra thought they were there for a morning skate. Mathieu had other plans. Big ones. He was going to propose.
Mathieu had been working on this proposal behind the scenes for a while. The couple already knew they wanted to get engaged, and Sandra had actually described two dream scenarios for how it might go down.
“The first one is in front of my family when I do not know, and the second one is having what I love most at heart, hockey, being part of it,” Sandra said in an interview with the team, published March 11.
Mathieu’s original idea? Propose at PPG Paints Arena, where the Penguins play their home games. That alone would have checked Sandra’s hockey box and made for a pretty great story.
But then real life did what real life does — it threw him a curveball that turned out way better than anything he’d scripted.
Sidney Crosby With the Picture-Perfect Assist
After practice wrapped, Mathieu and Sandra were waiting outside the complex, hoping to spot players as they headed out. That’s when Crosby drove by in his car and stopped right in front of them.
Sandra was thrilled. Her favorite player, right there. For Mathieu, it was pure adrenaline.
“I knew that her favorite player was Sidney Crosby, and she didn’t know that I was going to propose,” Mathieu said. “Then, Sidney Crosby passed by, and she wanted to take a picture with him while I was getting ready. She didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew that it was happening right now.”
So while Sandra was focused on taking a photo with Crosby, Mathieu was getting ready to drop to one knee. Sandra’s son was standing by with the camera, capturing the whole thing as it happened.
After popping the question, Mathieu gave Crosby a thumbs up — a small gesture that made an already unreal scene even better.
The video went viral on TikTok, and hockey fans and romantics alike could not get enough.
“We were waiting after the morning skate to try to get some autographs, and the captain came over to see us. I took the opportunity because it was magical for my fiancée,” Mathieu shared in a comment on the video.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Brought This Family Together
Here’s what makes this moment hit even harder: hockey — and the Penguins specifically — runs deep in Sandra’s family.
Sandra has been a Penguins fan for more than a decade. Her love of the sport started after watching Team Canada in the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Canada’s roster that year included two Penguins players, Crosby (captain) and Chris Kunitz, and the team won gold.
Sandra didn’t know much about hockey at the time, but she took notice of how good Crosby was. That initial spark grew into a full-blown connection with the sport and the team he leads.
“When my son was 7 years old, I told him to pick a team that we would follow, and he chose the Penguins,” Sandra told the team.
12 years later, Sandra and her son Shayan, now 18, are huge Penguins fans. Their favorite player? The same guy who unknowingly became part of one of the most important moments of Sandra’s life.
For Sandra, the Penguins have always been about more than wins and losses. They’ve been a way to connect with her son — and now, with her fiancé.
“The Penguins play a big chunk of my life with my son,” she told the team. “Hockey glued us together, and that’s how we spend a lot of quality and exciting time when we watch the Penguins play. Mathieu being a part of it brings a lot of fulfillment in our lives.”
Sometimes the best moments aren’t the ones you plan for. They’re the ones that show up in a car outside a practice rink in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania.
