Warner Bros. is setting the stage for Sinners to make a major mark at the upcoming Oscars, submitting two original songs from Ryan Coogler’s latest film for consideration in the Best Original Song category.

The first track, “I Lied to You,” is written by Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson and performed by breakout star Miles Caton. The second, “Last Time (I Seen the Sun),” is a stirring duet between Caton and Alice Smith, co-written by the pair alongside Göransson. Both songs have been praised for their blend of blues and soul.
Written and directed by Coogler, Sinners explores themes of redemption, heritage, and the Black experience through the eyes of a young preacher, Sammie Moore (played by Caton). Caton’s performance has positioned him as a strong contender in the supporting actor race, and could also find himself in rare company if nominated for both acting and songwriting — a feat achieved by only four artists in Academy history, including Lady Gaga and Mary J. Blige.

Behind the camera, Sinners reunites Coogler with several of his Black Panther collaborators, including Oscar winners Ludwig Göransson, Ruth E. Carter, and Hannah Beachler. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw is also in contention for a historic nomination.
Having already picked up honors at the Gotham Awards and Critics Choice Celebration of Black Cinema, Sinners now looks poised to bring the blues (and perhaps a little history) to the Academy Awards.
