Residents of Uthandi have raised concerns over the slow progress of the underground sewerage project that has, in turn, delayed relaying of roads in many parts of the locality. They also complained about increasing commercial encroachments, eating into road space.

Though pipeline laying has been completed in areas like VGP Layout, residents said house service connections are yet to be provided.

Work began 2 years ago

S.K. Kavitha, a resident, said patchwork had been done on dug-up roads recently. The work to provide sewerage network taken up two years ago has slowed down, further delaying blacktopping.

Abhirami Balaji of VGP Layout Phase I, said residents have been managing with poor-quality roads as the sewer work is yet to be completed. Motorists face a tough time navigating the stretch during rain.

Residents also complained of encroachments by commercial establishments and eateries, particularly along First Main Road and Second Main Road, with some of them placing tables on the service lanes. The problem is more pronounced on roads leading to the beach. Unregulated parking of vehicles has blocked access for motorists entering from the East Coast Road, said Ms. Balaji.

Menaga Shankar, Ward 197 councillor, noted that some areas such as Pidariamman Koil Street and Thantoni Amman Koil Street have not been brought under the sewer network. “Blacktopping of roads where work has been completed would begin after the monsoon. The issue of encroachments by commercial establishments would be addressed,” she said.

75% work completed

Officials of the Chennai Metrowater said the ₹82-crore underground drainage project is progressing on schedule, with nearly 75% of the work completed.

While one part of the project in areas like VGP Layout would be commissioned next month, another package covering localities, including Nainarkuppam, would be ready by February. The third package was delayed due to monsoon. The project aims to provide 1,300 house service connections and lay 31.6- km-long sewer pipelines in Uthandi.

Of the 123 streets, nearly 68 streets have been handed over to the Greater Chennai Corporation for blacktopping.
