Mumbai civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has issued ‘stop work’ notices to 53 construction sites in Mumbai for violating the guidelines for air pollution control and warned construction project owners of strict action for not adhering to the guidelines.
“If sensor-based Air Quality Index (AQI) plants are found to be closed, strict action will be taken against the concerned construction site,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr. Ashwini Joshi.
Ms. Joshi, on Thursday (November 27, 2025), reviewed the status of sensor-based air quality index measuring plants at construction sites. According to BMC, the 662 sensor-based air quality index measuring plants have been installed at construction sites in Mumbai, while the process of installing 251 plants is underway. A total of 400 plants have been linked to the dashboard prepared in accordance with the integrated data collection. Out of these, 117 plants are inactive.
The increased levels of air pollution observed in November, a total of 53 constructions has been issued ‘stop work’ notices. This includes 17 in Siddharth Nagar area in ‘G’ South zone, five in Mazgaon area in ‘E’ zone, and 31 in Malad (West) area in ‘P’ North zone.
On Thursday, BMC held a meeting with the Environment and Climate Change Department, CEEW (agency appointed for development of the centralised dashboard), and the 15 shortlisted vendors of sensor-based air quality monitoring systems.
BMC appointed flying squads to monitor the guidelines issued last year on October 15. The measures cover 28 points for air pollution control, including the installation of fences around the site, air pollution measurement systems at construction sites, smoke absorbers, covering them with green cloth, spraying water, and storing and transporting dust.
Other measures taken by the BMC were the implementation of bakeries and crematoriums on clean fuel, the use of electric buses, projects to process construction debris, and the spraying of water on roads to control dust.
Among the 593 bakeries in Mumbai, 209 bakeries were running on clean fuel. So far, 57 bakeries have been converted to clean fuel. In the last six months, 75 bakeries have taken the initiative for this change, and another 88 bakeries have applied for Mahanagar Gas,” said BMC officials in the statement.
