Starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi in compelling performances, Haq revisits the landmark Shah Bano case, a legal battle that reshaped the nation’s conversation around justice, personal law, identity, and the delicate intersections of marriage and rights. Varma’s storytelling enters the raw emotional space shared by a husband and wife, offering a razor-sharp yet humane narrative while steering clear of the easy route of villainising either side. It’s this emotional honesty that continues to resonate deeply with audiences.
With this strong impact at the prestigious festival, the film is now set for a major streaming release in January, poised to spark another wave of nationwide conversation.
Suparn S. Varma said, “The Shah Bano case has lived in our national consciousness for decades, not because it is about law, but because it is about people. Real people, imperfect people… people who loved, hurt, fought, forgave. I wanted to step into that emotional fault line and tell the story without judgement. We’re living in times where narratives are pushed to extremes and nuance becomes a casualty. With Haq, my effort was to allow audiences to sit with discomfort, empathy, conflict, and reflection without being told what to think.”
He added, “Seeing the response at IFFI, watching the audience engage so sensitively — clapping at dialogues, picking up on subtleties – it was deeply moving. That, to me, is the greatest reward.”
Meanwhile, strong industry chatter suggests the Haq filmmaker is now developing a gripping story set against the backdrop of an IPL (Indian Premier League) scam, with major studios and top producers already keenly in talks with him.
