Warner Bros. and DC Studios have released the first trailer for Supergirl, giving audiences their first full look at Milly Alcock’s take on Kara Zor-El ahead of the film’s June 26 theatrical debut.
The trailer positions Alcock’s Supergirl far from the polished optimism often associated with the character. Opening on a weary Kara blowing out a birthday candle in a dark room, the footage quickly establishes a heroine shaped by frustration, isolation and a tangle of personal history.
Inspired by Tom King’s comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the film follows Kara as she travels across a network of rough, chaotic off-world settlements, accompanied by her loyal companion Krypto. The tone evokes a looser, more anarchic energy than recent DC entries, with Craig Gillespie directing from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. At a preview event, Gillespie described the film as an anti-hero story, emphasising Kara’s emotional baggage and her struggle to operate outside Superman’s shadow.
The trailer also offers a brief glimpse of Jason Momoa as Lobo, the chain-smoking intergalactic mercenary long rumored to enter DC’s new continuity. Matthias Schoenaerts appears as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, with Eve Ridley playing Ruthye, who seeks Kara’s help to avenge her father.
James Gunn, who oversees DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, noted that Alcock had been his early choice for the role, citing her distinct presence. He also emphasised the film’s intention to present a more abrasive, imperfect superhero — “a punk direction,” as he described it — rather than a mirror of Superman’s idealism.
