About Superman
James Gunn’s Superman opens with a quick recap of how metahumans came into being. In the very next shot, we see a wounded and vulnerable Superman lying on the ground, soon rescued by a dog named Krypto, who wears a red cape just like Superman. He’s taken to crystalline refuge, The Fortress of Solitude, where robots help heal his body. While recovering, Superman sees a broken hologram message from his Kryptonian parents, the only connection to his home planet.
Superman movie: Story
Back in Metropolis, Superman is hammered by a mystery figure, who seems to have similar abilities to him, if not more. The mysterious figure causes enough damage, but the narrative is shifted to it being a solid response to Superman’s attack on the country’s armed forces. The Man of Steel defends his actions, stating it was done to prevent a war in a poor neighbouring nation, Jarhanpur, which could’ve claimed many lives.
On the other hand, the Boravian President claims the mysterious figure has no ties with the government. But then, who caused the mayhem and chaos across Metropolis? It’s none other than Lex Luthor orchestrating it from LuthorCorp in a glass tower. What’s his main purpose in villainising Superman in front of everyone? The answer to this unfolds as the story moves further.
Superman attempts to strike the right balance between fast-paced action and emotional storytelling. What truly stands out in this superhero film is the core message of humanity, peace, and friendship amid chaos. Superman’s role as a beacon of hope shines throughout, especially during moments of global turmoil. His uneven journey is balanced through unwavering support from his loved ones, his dog Krypto and his ‘friends’, adding depth to character dynamics and overall narrative.
Having said that, the first half of Superman struggles to gain momentum. Several subplots are introduced in the beginning, making the story feel scattered and at times confusing. The lack of focus hampers the overall viewing experience, which initially seems delightful. Certain scenes, especially the extended hologram message from Superman’s parents, lack clarity and add to the confusion. The protagonist remains uninformed about the truth and so does the audience. These minute missteps affect the otherwise engaging first half.
Nevertheless, the second half manages to redeem the film and keeps the boat afloat. The emotional payoffs and coherent storytelling succeed.
Superman Review: Direction
James Gunn offers a refreshing yet faithful take on the beloved superhero. His vision resonates well, staying true to the character’s core nature as a symbol of hope, compassion, and strength. However, there are moments where his storytelling feels uneven. Some narrative threads, especially in the first half, could have benefited from more clarity and focus. Had it been clearer from the beginning, the viewing experience would’ve been flawless.
Superman review: Performances
David Corenswet gives a standout performance as Superman in James Gunn’s vision of the iconic hero. He captures the essence of the superhero as a symbol of hope, making the character feel both grounded and inspirational. David’s portrayal in Superman adds depth and humanity, making his overall journey resonant.
Supporting him is Rachel Brosnahan, who shines as Lois Lane. Her chemistry with the actor adds authenticity to their dynamic. She brings intelligence, wit, and emotional strength to the character. Nicholas Hoult makes a strong impression as Lex Luthor, injecting the film with the necessary tension and complexity.
