Barely a day away from her performance at the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi, Swedish pop artiste, dancer and influencer, Meira Omar, opens up on the different avenues of entertainment she has experimented with, and how singing came to be her calling. Meira’s recent hit ‘Hush Hush’, featured in Melodifestivalen 2025 (Sweden’s national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest), peaked to the top of Spotify’s Top 50 Sweden and was ranked sixth on national radio charts, cementing her status as one of Sweden’s most exciting new voices. In 2024, she also appeared on Netflix’s Love Is Blind: Sweden and has dabbled in Bollywood too with a role in a 2016-film Wajah Tum Ho.

“My father is from Afghanistan; my mother is from Russia and in those two cultures there is a lot of music and dancing,” says Meira, while talking about the genesis of her creative pursuits. She has been schooled in theatre and plays piano, she informs. “I’m so grateful for my family having that mixed background; we fled the war and Afghanistan in the early 1990s. My father always chose the path for himself and did not care about religious or cultural differences. And then we moved to Sweden. I come from a region in Sweden that is diverse and has immigrants from all over the world, including Iraq, Bosnia, and Bangladesh.”
It was this openness to exploring new cultures, food and languages that also drew Meira to Hindi cinema. “I grew up watching Bollywood movies and can speak a little Hindi too,” she says reminiscing her five years in Mumbai, where she tried her luck in the movies. “I landed in Mumbai in 2014 and left India just before the pandemic. What I love about Bollywood is that it is not just about the acting, but also about dancing and singing. The years were challenging; in all these auditions and casting calls you’re probably facing more rejections in a week than some people experience in their lifetime. But it made me resilient and I would not have been where I am today without that experience,” she adds.

The journey to Melodifestivalen 2025 was not a cakewalk for Meira. She began sending them the recordings of her songs in 2019 and persisted through consistency. “With ‘Hush, Hush’, the stars just aligned. I like to see my art as global. Sweden is the largest exporter of pop music to the world. We have some of the greatest producers and songwriters who have created hits for many decades. So you get to work with these amazing songwriters and producers who can create hooks and hits. At the same time, I get to incorporate elements of where I come from — that can be the instruments we use in Afghanistan or India,” she adds.

Talking about her Netflix series Love Is Blind: Sweden, Meira shares that her experience with Hindi cinema, coupled with her love for the camera, gave her the push to appear on the reality show that changed her life for good. Meira was a contestant on the first season of Love Is Blind: Sweden, where she got engaged to Oskar Nordstrand. “I was a fan of the show and had seen American versions of it, but on my friend’s insistence, I took it up. Love is Blind aligned with my values. It wasn’t just for the sake of scandal or drama. It was the first season in Europe, the first in Sweden, and no one had any idea of what it would become and that it would go on to be among the top 10 Netflix hits,” she signs off.
Meira will perform three songs with dancers from Delhi at the Embassy of Sweden, New Delhi, on October 15.
