Teacher remanded in judicial custody under POCSO Act dies of ‘heart attack’

A government schoolteacher, who was arrested under the POCSO Act, died allegedly of heart attack while in judicial custody on Tuesday night.

The teacher of a government higher secondary school in Dharmapuri was accused of sexually harassing a girl student on November 27.

The incident, was reported to the school headmistress on December 15. Subsequently, the headmistress lodged a police complaint following which the accused was arrested on December 16, and remanded in judicial custody.

According to sources, he had complained of chest pain to the prison guard late on Tuesday night, and collapsed. He was rushed to the Dharmapuri government medical college hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Following this, the body was sent for autopsy.

Family seeks inquiry

According to sources, a magistrate’s inquest is slated to be conducted. The family of the deceased has raised suspicions over the cause of death and have demanded an inquiry.
