Three arrested for ₹1.07 crore burglary in engineering college

Three, including a minor, from an inter-State burglary gang, were arrested by the Rachakonda police for breaking into Brilliant Engineering College at Batasingaram on October 9, and stealing ₹1.07 crore which was collected as student fee.

A total of ₹37.05 lakh in stolen cash was recovered from the accused during a vehicle check carried out by teams from Abdullapurmet police and Rachakonda Central Crime Station CCS) in Kothaguda X roads.

The arrested were identified as Raj Manohar Pawar, 22, a first-year BBA student from Gujarat, and Rithik Mohite, 24, a BA LLB student from Madhya Pradesh and a 16-year-old. Three other accused, identified as Dinesh Mohite, 27, Arun Mohite, 18 and Vilas Chohan, 22, are currently absconding.

Police seized ₹16 lakh from Raj Manohar Pawar, ₹5.65 lakh and a mobile phone from Rithik Mohite, and ₹15.40 lakh from the juvenile offender.

The case came to light following a complainant by the 61-year-old principal of the institution, who returned the next morning, on October 10, to find the office door and iron almirah broken open. Acting on his complaint, police teams were sent to Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka to track the offenders.

Investigations revealed that the accused were distant relatives, who often met during family functions. Dinesh and Arun Mohite have previous records involving property offences. They reportedly used Google Maps to identify isolated educational institutions close to national highways, targeting them at night.

According to police, the gang began their journey from Gujarat in the first week of October, travelled via Mumbai and Aurangabad, and reached Hyderabad on October 9. After scouting other colleges, they found Brilliant Engineering College at Batasingaram to be suitable due to its remote location. They hid in bushes until midnight and then broke into the campus administration block, taking away ₹1.07 crore in cash and later dividing it among themselves.

Efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
